A used car can be an important purchase for your family. Before handing over money, give the paperwork the same attention you give the vehicle.

Check the vehicle’s history

Use the VIN to review title history through a provider listed by TxDMV’s Title Check program. A history report and an independent mechanical inspection answer different questions; consider both.

Review the paperwork

For a private sale, check the signed title, the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U), and any supporting documents your situation requires. Confirm that the seller’s information matches the records.

Plan the transfer

TxDMV says buyers must apply for a new title within 30 days of purchase. Contact the county tax office about current requirements and fees. Do not assume paying the seller completes the title transfer.
