Before the First Texas Freeze: A Homeowner’s Checklist

English: Prepare your home before temperatures drop

Getting ready for a freeze is easier when you start before the forecast becomes urgent. Set aside time to walk through your home, make a short list and discuss your questions with your insurance agent.

Start with the pipes

Texas Department of Insurance recommends insulating exposed pipes, disconnecting outdoor hoses and knowing how to shut off the water. Follow local instructions about dripping faucets and water use.

Keep a record of what you own

Photograph or record each room, including closets and the garage. Save your inventory somewhere you can access if your home is damaged.

Ask about your policy

Ask how your policy treats sudden water damage from a burst pipe, what deductible applies and what precautions it requires. Coverage depends on your policy and the circumstances.
